Sharing China’s Desert Restoration Success in Markham, Canada

At the Markham City Hall in Toronto, our team had the honor of sharing the remarkable results of desertification control and reforestation efforts in Qinghai, China with the Mayor and city council members.

These initiatives—focused on returning farmland to forest and grassland—have not only curbed the spread of desertification but also provided valuable lessons for global ecological conservation. Through decades of hard work, local communities have transformed barren landscapes into thriving ecosystems, restoring biodiversity and improving livelihoods.

Why This Matters Globally

Desertification is a global challenge, affecting millions of people across Asia, Africa, and beyond. The experience from Qinghai demonstrates that large-scale ecological restoration is possible when science, policy, and community participation come together.

Looking Ahead

We hope to see these strategies and insights shared with other regions around the world facing similar challenges, creating opportunities for knowledge exchange and collaboration. Together, we can work toward a more resilient and sustainable planet.
